The Region
Larger than its neighbouring Morillon, Samoens is located at the head of the valley and has a beautiful rustic town square. There are a fair selection of shops, cafes and bars, in addition to the ever popular open air ice rink. A very typical Savoyard alpine village steeped in history and tradition make this the perfect alternative to the better known, but purpose built characterless village of Flaine. The overall combination of the extensive skiing, accommodation and the lovely village atmosphere make this a fantastic option with a very French flavour.
The Skiing
Nestling in the shadow of the Grand Massif mountain range, Morrillon and Samoens offer skiing to suit every ability. The connecting lift network opens up the immense ski area of the Petit Massif quickly and efficiently. Beginners start with the gentle slopes at Morillon on the Marvel, Sairon and Charina runs and the base of Samoens 1600 on the Soleil, Demoiselles and Char, but will quickly progress to join the intermediates traversing the wide variety of blue and red runs covering the mountain. In particular the long winding blues of Blachot, Combe, Sarbotte and Lou Darbes, that criss-cross down the mountain to the village of Les Carroz. More time on snow and less time in a lift queue is the key to learning, and pupils will certainly ski a high mileage during the week. The more advanced skiers can take on the more challenging runs of Aigle Noir, Marmottes and Corne down towards Samoens, as well as the numerous red runs towards Morillon and Les Carroz. It allows you to ski down to Flaine and take the link back. We would only recommend the purchase of an extension for the full Grand Massif and a further 100km to the most advanced skires or party leaders.
Accommodation
We offer several accommodation options, with a number of quality hotels in the village, which are only a short walk from the village centre and a short coach ride to the new Grand Massif Express gondola on the outskirts of the village,or in the small satellite village of Vercland next to the Saix gondola for doorstep skiing.
One such hotel is the Hotel Edelweiss, where you are assured of a friendly welcome. This well appointed family run hotel is situated on an elevated position above Samoens. The unique decor throughout is excellent and the views from the hotel are spectacular. This hotel already has a following, with many of our groups returning each year, so early booking is recommended.
