SKI ITALY - Bormio

The Region

Situated at the foot of the Stelvio Pass, close to the Swiss and Austrian borders in the Lombardy region of Italy, Bormio is a highly unusual resort. A 17th century medieval Italian spa town, unspoiled by the passage of time and so very differnt from most apline resorts.
The high snow sure slopes of the Cima Bianca mountain and nearby Santa Caterina ensure good skiing throughout the season. The traditional apres ski facilities can still be found, so the numerous shops, bars, cafes and discos, along with swimming, skating and tobogganing will keep your group entertained in the evenings.

The Skiing

Set high in the Valtellina area of the Lombardy Mountains, Bormio offers some of the highest non-glacier skiing in Europe. The high snow bowl and modern snow making facilities ensure quality skiing from early in the season until late April. The tall narrow pistes drop down towards the town, heading into the quiet sheltered tree lined runs that end in the town itself. The two stage Cima Bianca cable car takes you from the town to the top station at 3010m via the mini resort of Bormio 2000.

It is from the gentle nursery slopes beside Bormio 2000 that most of the ski schools classes will start. This means straight up the mountain for all skiers on day one! From these slopes the beginners will quickly join the more advanced skiers at the top of the mountain to tackle the fantastic 14km long winding cruise from the top station to the town. For the intermediate skiers the whole mountain is accessible, even the 2005 Men's World Championship downhill course. For the more adventurous there are a few tricky blacks in Bormio and the neighbouring area of Santa Caterina. Indeed, the nearby ski areas of San Colobano and Santa Caterina are only a short coach ride away, and each offers a nice variety of runs to suit all skiers and are certainly worth at least one day trip.

Overall Bormio offers a wide variety of snow sure skiing over three areas especially suited to school groups.
